Bio

Painting1
For decades Louisa has been painting and drawing landscapes, waterscapes, cityscapes, and human figures on location, working near her home in Sonoma County, California, as well as many other areas in the U.S., Europe, and elsewhere.

"I find no substitute for a direct experience with nature...The layers achieved from the ever-changing light, and the gestural, spontaneous technique that is encouraged by a limited time frame make the results very rewarding."

In recent years one of Louisa's primary focuses in her home studio has been painting views of the earth (see 'Earthvisions' in this website 'Paintings'), based on observations remembered or sketches rendered while flying to her next 'plein air' destination.  Her other focus has been a series of butterfly paintings (see some of her butterfly tapestries in 'Abstractions' in this website 'Paintings').  They are inspired by seven butterflies chosen from around the world as the source for music ('Butterfly Effects') composed by her childhood friend, Elizabeth Vercoe, whose music has been published and performed in the U.S. and abroad
.

Louisa studied painting with Walter Gaudnek at UCLA, to whom she attributes the abstract quality of her work. She subsequently studied with Daniel Mendelowitz in Florence, Italy, before receiving a fine arts degree from Stanford University. In 1984, Louisa did a figures workshop with Joseph Mugnaini (illustrator of The Martian Chronicles), and in 1994, she visited St. Petersburg, Russia, to study and paint with The Hermitage Group.
